QTC Speech #2

QTCで2回目のSpeech(Project 2)をトライ!

Project 2の目標は"Organize my speech"だ。

End.

まあ、何はともあれMayukoさんよりバナーをもらう。感動!記念にアップしとく!

Project 2: The Enjoyment of the Mountain

A. Opening
Good evening Toastmasters and welcome guests.

1. Captures audience attention
Who knows who George Mallory is?
You may not know him - but I have no doubt that you know his famous quote.
I will give you the hint. He is:
An English mountain climber
He made a bold and possibly successful drive toward the summit of Mt Everest in 1924, a climb which cost him his life.
He could have been the first man to climb Mt Everest.
Mallory's body was discovered on Everest in 1999, but whether or not he reached the summit before he died remains a subject of speculation and continuing research.
The mystery about his final effort to conquer Everest has made his name legendary among mountaineers.
2. Leads into speech topic
Now for his famous quote!
I have absolutely no doubt that you know his famous three word answer to the question "Why do you want to climb Mt. Everest?"
He said "Because it's there"

This is one example why you might want to climb mountains.
Another example, someone might want to do rock climbing. This type of climber is called “ファイト一発” (that is a TV commercial message of Lipovitan D). It’s a joke.

There is so best way to describe mountain climbing, it covers a wide range of feelings and the value of the experience depends on the person.
Today, after reflecting on my 3 years of experience in mountain climbing I am going to share my thoughts with you.

B. Body
First there is a very good reason I started mountain climbing - my boss asked me.
I had a no choice, I had to be there, so I did. Amazingly, it proved to be exciting, energising and exhilarating for me.

1. Yearning to the unknown
First, I have a yearning about the unknown. In other words my curiosity is fueled by the excitement of conquering a mountain.
The thrill of not knowing what I will see, hear and find. The wonder of nature mixed with the wonder of human nature as I share the experience of a climb.

a. Close your eyes for a moment and imagine the glorious view from the peak. From here you have a wondrous and impressive view of the city, sea, lake and mountains open your eyes now and share in the beauty of my photos.
The amazing scenery from the peak – this is a view you don’t’ see when in the city.

b. Even more interesting is that you meet the seasons. Mountains and their landscape change according to a season, being there brings it alive.
In Spring it seems the fresh green shines day by day. The winds are also fresh which demonstrates a lively motion of life and is felt by all.
In Autumn the leaves are very brilliant and colourful.
My most favorite season is the winter. I love winter. The mountain is at its most beautiful. See my photos. There is snow and cold ice trees as far as you can see.

2. After the amazing beauty comes a deep, deep personal fulfillment.
Previously, sport had given me that fulfillment but not to the same extent. I felt great when I won yet was often having regrets over some mistake I had made. I was mortified when I could no longer play at my previous level. I was even more mortified when I lost. As a result, I did not really achieve a deep inner fulfillment.
How different my experience is with mountain climbing.
It brings me a deep fulfillment when I stand the peak without needing to fight with someone to achieve it.
Now, I did not say it was easy mountain climbing, it is often a tough challenge. However, there is a clear target - to conquer the mountain and stand at the summit.
Keeping those wonderful images and feelings in my mind helps me as I overcome challenges and advance toward reaching the summit. There are many difficult places and some wonderful scenery on the way.
I go up part of the way intently. Finally, I feel a deep achievement when I stand at the peak. That is the mountain. This photo represents my fulfillment.

3. There are huge amounts of calories consumed by Mountain Climbing. This my final reason for mountain climbing – having the stamina to keep on climbing.
The sheet here shows the amount of calories consumed by different sport per hour.
Mountain climbing is 453 calories per hour as same as jogging.
However, consider comparing the time involved in climbing to that playing another sport.
How long can you jog for? If you can complete a full marathon then fantastic! Not everyone can achieve that and it is not easy.
Can you lift a heavy weight for a long time? If you do - then you may do damage to yourself. It may mean you will be too tired for the whole week. I played rugby for a long time during my college days. But it is absolutely impossible now.
The bottom line is that the only sport that you can easily do for a long time is mountain climbing. As a result, mountain climbing uses a huge amount of consumption calories.
The other day we easily climbed Mt. Misen at the Miyazima. It was about 4 hours climbing. Is that right, Sedohara san? This means we consumed 1812kcal

Consumption calories (kcal) by each sport: Man(60kg/1hour)
1 Running 835
2 Weight lifting 684
3 Swimming 579
4 Rugby 518
5 Soccer 518
6 Jogging(120m/minute) 453
7 Climbing Mountain 453
8 Cycling 288
9 Baseball 244
10 Walking 205

C. Conclusion
For these 3 reasons, yearning for the unknown, bringing a deep fulfillment and huge amount of consumption calories, are my thought of why do you want to climb mountains.
I definitely think mountain climbing is the greatest sport of all.
I enjoy my mountain climbing and will do more and more of it.
I am planning to go to the Japanese Alps this September and know I will be excited, energised and exhilarated by that feeling of deep fulfillment from the wonderful views and scenery.

Watch this space for an awesome story of my trip to the Japan Alps.
