QTC Speech #3

Thanks!

Project 3: This is Rugby

1. Opening
1) Captures audience attention
Who thinks Rugby is a disorganized and barbarous sport?
That may be because you do not understand it.
Would it surprise you to hear that it is actually very organized and civilized?

In rugby, the end of the game is called "no side" instead of "game over”.
This means both sides of defense and attack are gone when the game is over.
Then players, who have just been competing fiercely, suddenly praise each other as worthy competitors. This is called the rugby spirit.

2) Leads into speech topic
Why did I explain about rugby? I would like you to see rugby as a game like Carp or Sanfrecce.
I think everyone here could really enjoy watching rugby being played.
However I heard someone say they don’t understand the rules so therefore cannot enjoy watching it being played.
・Even if you don’t know the rules, you can still enjoy watching a rugby game without having a reason, simply for enjoyment.
・You only need to understand a few things to get the real thrill of rugby and to enjoy watching it.

Today I will give you just 2 easy-to-understand points that demonstrate the real thrills of rugby.

2. Body
1) Dynamic Clash
First, realize that rugby is a dynamic fighting sport.
You can see the dynamic clash played with powerful hitting sound during the game.
They are so powerful you can see, hear and feel the clashes right in front of your eyes.
‘Clash and dash’ against a competitor is not in the rules for other sports.
This creates a tremendous visual impact compared with being a spectator of other sports.

I urge you to watch for yourself, I have no doubt that you will experience more thrills and exhilaration as you watch the players do battle on the field.
It will raise your fighting spirit, one that you can easily forget in your daily life.

The highlight of ‘clash play’ is the tackle.
Players tackle their rival who is running at top speed.
This means players need unbelievable courage.
The players are big and strong and just imagine a brick building running full speed at you!
After the tackle has been successfully completed, you can feel a change of tide in the battle.
And the teammates will be risen their fighting spirit.

Also, for your information, there is a clash play about 40 times a game at least.
This means you can see a powerful clash play once every 2 minutes.

2). Fantastic Running Play while passing the ball.
Next is Fantastic Running Play. No matter what other say, it is fantastic.
It goes forward with top speed running while passing the ball.
Then final player is running while dodge between some tacklers or dash off some tacklers.
Then try! I have definitely no doubt that it feels great to watch it.

You can see those great fantastic running just in front of you.
It has a tremendous impact compare with other sports.

To continue, the passing of the ball is very important for running play.
You may think it is just passing a ball to next player. However it is completely different.
The player who has to pass the ball, is under huge pressure from his tackler.
He needs to be mentally strong to be able to dismiss his fear and believe he can break through and pass to his own team member.
If he does not then, it is not successful. I definitely believe it is very profound and powerful play.

I will explain the pass play with a simple example.
Imagine one tackler in front of us. We are just 2 players.
If I just pass a ball to anther player. A tackler will tackle another player. Then our play will be stopped.
But if I pass a ball to another player just before I am tackled by tackler, another player can run without a competitor.
This is a very simple technique, but it is very difficult to play. It also
means the player has to play to dismiss his fear and believe his team player will be there.

3. Ending
So you see how amazing and exciting the game is?
Simply considering 2 plays, demonstrates the basic play of a game that you can watch frequently. It means you can enjoy watching a rugby game without reason.

Close your eyes for one minute and imagine that you are in the rugby stadium and seeing my rugby game.
Take a moment to see what you can see, the players, our jerseys, all pumped up hear the cheers, the encouragement of the crowd, the buzz in the air.
Feel the feelings of euphoria, you feel pumped up, what you can hear and feel what you can feel. See it in brighter bolder colors, double the sound of cheering.
Now, you see a powerful tackle just in front of you.
Then player is passing a ball to the next player just before he is tackled by competitor.
The next player goes forward with top speed running while he passes the ball.
Then finally the player is running, dodging between tacklers.
Then victory, you score a try! Wow!
The excitement is amazing.
(I will chang my clothes to rugby uniform at this minute)

Open your eyes; here before you is a great rugby player.

QTC Speech #2

QTCで2回目のSpeech(Project 2)をトライ!

CIMG0699_convert_20090726002608.jpg

Project 2の目標は"Organize my speech"だ。

End.

Project 2: The Enjoyment of the Mountain

A. Opening
Good evening Toastmasters and welcome guests.

1. Captures audience attention
Who knows who George Mallory is?
You may not know him - but I have no doubt that you know his famous quote.
I will give you the hint. He is:
An English mountain climber
He made a bold and possibly successful drive toward the summit of Mt Everest in 1924, a climb which cost him his life.
He could have been the first man to climb Mt Everest.
Mallory's body was discovered on Everest in 1999, but whether or not he reached the summit before he died remains a subject of speculation and continuing research.
The mystery about his final effort to conquer Everest has made his name legendary among mountaineers.
2. Leads into speech topic
Now for his famous quote!
I have absolutely no doubt that you know his famous three word answer to the question "Why do you want to climb Mt. Everest?"
He said "Because it's there"

This is one example why you might want to climb mountains.
Another example, someone might want to do rock climbing. This type of climber is called “ファイト一発” (that is a TV commercial message of Lipovitan D). It’s a joke.

There is so best way to describe mountain climbing, it covers a wide range of feelings and the value of the experience depends on the person.
Today, after reflecting on my 3 years of experience in mountain climbing I am going to share my thoughts with you.

B. Body
First there is a very good reason I started mountain climbing - my boss asked me.
I had a no choice, I had to be there, so I did. Amazingly, it proved to be exciting, energising and exhilarating for me.

1. Yearning to the unknown
First, I have a yearning about the unknown. In other words my curiosity is fueled by the excitement of conquering a mountain.
The thrill of not knowing what I will see, hear and find. The wonder of nature mixed with the wonder of human nature as I share the experience of a climb.

a. Close your eyes for a moment and imagine the glorious view from the peak. From here you have a wondrous and impressive view of the city, sea, lake and mountains open your eyes now and share in the beauty of my photos.
The amazing scenery from the peak – this is a view you don’t’ see when in the city.
speech2_convert_20090726231537.jpg

b. Even more interesting is that you meet the seasons. Mountains and their landscape change according to a season, being there brings it alive.
In Spring it seems the fresh green shines day by day. The winds are also fresh which demonstrates a lively motion of life and is felt by all.
In Autumn the leaves are very brilliant and colourful.
My most favorite season is the winter. I love winter. The mountain is at its most beautiful. See my photos. There is snow and cold ice trees as far as you can see.
speech12_convert_20090726231930.jpg

2. After the amazing beauty comes a deep, deep personal fulfillment.
Previously, sport had given me that fulfillment but not to the same extent. I felt great when I won yet was often having regrets over some mistake I had made. I was mortified when I could no longer play at my previous level. I was even more mortified when I lost. As a result, I did not really achieve a deep inner fulfillment.
How different my experience is with mountain climbing.
It brings me a deep fulfillment when I stand the peak without needing to fight with someone to achieve it.
Now, I did not say it was easy mountain climbing, it is often a tough challenge. However, there is a clear target - to conquer the mountain and stand at the summit.
Keeping those wonderful images and feelings in my mind helps me as I overcome challenges and advance toward reaching the summit. There are many difficult places and some wonderful scenery on the way.
I go up part of the way intently. Finally, I feel a deep achievement when I stand at the peak. That is the mountain. This photo represents my fulfillment.
speech3_convert_20090726232257.jpg

3. There are huge amounts of calories consumed by Mountain Climbing. This my final reason for mountain climbing – having the stamina to keep on climbing.
The sheet here shows the amount of calories consumed by different sport per hour.
Mountain climbing is 453 calories per hour as same as jogging.
However, consider comparing the time involved in climbing to that playing another sport.
How long can you jog for? If you can complete a full marathon then fantastic! Not everyone can achieve that and it is not easy.
Can you lift a heavy weight for a long time? If you do - then you may do damage to yourself. It may mean you will be too tired for the whole week. I played rugby for a long time during my college days. But it is absolutely impossible now.
The bottom line is that the only sport that you can easily do for a long time is mountain climbing. As a result, mountain climbing uses a huge amount of consumption calories.
The other day we easily climbed Mt. Misen at the Miyazima. It was about 4 hours climbing. Is that right, Sedohara san? This means we consumed 1812kcal

Consumption calories (kcal) by each sport: Man(60kg/1hour)
1 Running 835
2 Weight lifting 684
3 Swimming 579
4 Rugby 518
5 Soccer 518
6 Jogging(120m/minute) 453
7 Climbing Mountain 453
8 Cycling 288
9 Baseball 244
10 Walking 205

C. Conclusion
For these 3 reasons, yearning for the unknown, bringing a deep fulfillment and huge amount of consumption calories, are my thought of why do you want to climb mountains.
I definitely think mountain climbing is the greatest sport of all.
I enjoy my mountain climbing and will do more and more of it.
I am planning to go to the Japanese Alps this September and know I will be excited, energised and exhilarated by that feeling of deep fulfillment from the wonderful views and scenery.

Watch this space for an awesome story of my trip to the Japan Alps.

QTC Speech #1

The Enjoyment of Life
1. Opening (Younger days)
Good evening fellow toastmasters and welcome guests.
I want to start by asking you a very important question ! Do you enjoy your life? For me, yes, I do.
Today, I will tell you how I enjoy my life.
First, I want to explain ‘why’ I enjoy my life now, by telling you something about my younger days. If I were to use one word to remind myself of my young days, it would be to learn ‘patience’.
I was not very satisfied with my life when I was younger, even when I had performed and achieved as a rugby player in a strong rugby team. Please look at this picture. This is when I was in college.
6a01101663c576860d01101629d530860c_convert_20100920235020.jpg
Rugby dominated my life, I did nothing but played rugby every day. We trained hard so as to win the game. We did not think of losing, we thought only about how to win.
When I was 32, I stopped playing rugby in my company’s rugby team, Blue Zoomers. But I continued to stay on the team as a coach. It was not fun, and I did not enjoy doing that. I was not in the action, I was on the sidelines, just ‘thinking HOW to win.’I was not enjoying my life.

So, I decided to change and go find new enjoyment in life ‘after rugby’. I decided to spend time with good friends who would encourage me to take up other amazing activities.

2. Body (After retired rugby)
Now, let me share 4 different fun experiences as a result of that decision. I have gained so much enjoyment from them as you will hear.

1) Mountain climbing
Three years ago I started mountain climbing. It gives me a lot of pleasure. Beyond the physical climb, I gain a feeling of a deep fulfillment when I stand at the peak. I even forget how difficult the climb was, and feel how the air tastes great. The view and scenery from the summit is spectacular!

Here is Mt. Ishizuchi in the Ehime prefecture, it is the highest mountain in this area.
6a01101663c576860d01101838bb2c860f_convert_20100922224457.jpg
The best part after coming down from the mountain is to enjoy the hot spring and drink some cold beer. Fantastic!

2) Rugby re-visited
Would you believe it ?…….I then discovered how to enjoy rugby again ?!
First by cheering my favorite rugby team. 0f course, the Mazda Blue Zoomers; see my T-shirt!
In fact, they are playing a game tomorrow at Hiroshima stadium. I am so excited! Would you like to join me? It will be amazing.

Back to the point…
Second, another fun way to enjoy rugby is playing for enjoyment, not caring if we win or lose.
I have joined a local team of Hiroshima in Kure. This club is not concerned about wining or losing. My teammates and I play for the simple enjoyment of the game.

3) Weight lifting
Now into the heavy stuff, weight lifting is also one of my favorite sports.
See this picture. This is squat. I love it.

For me, it is a stress-buster.
My mind is totally clear, everything just disappears when I lift the heavy weights. All my concentration is centered on lifting the weight. All I can think of is how many times it goes up; one, two, and three.
When I make it to ten that is great - it is final. It feels amazing.

4) Great friends
In the past, I thought the best friends were the ones who encouraged me during my rugby playing days.
Now I have opened up my focus and attracted a whole new set of great friends, who encourage me in the different areas of my life.
See these pictures. They are all my best friends.
6a01101663c576860d011016196775860b_convert_20100922225323.jpg
These are a sample of the fun things in my life.
I also write about these things in my blog.

6a01101663c576860d0110162d24d2860c_convert_20100922225749.jpg

3. Conclusion
As for my next peak…
What next?
・I want to enjoy my life more and more.
・I want to enjoy QTC with good friends, that is my next target peak.
・To make the most of this I am improving my English.
・Yes, I can do that with the support of my fellow club members.

Till next time, I leave you with a question - How do you want to enjoy your life?
